His and Hers

Our Perspectives

This section shares how Payton and Jessie each remember the start of their story: the prayers, the timing, the small nudges, and the unmistakable ways the Lord brought their lives together. Settle in and enjoy their His‑and‑Hers retelling of how it all began.

"Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate"

HIS

As you may quickly observe by comparing our sides of the story, there is a difference of where it starts… I first met Jessie while tutoring at GCU in the anatomy lab. However, she does not remember these initial encounters. (Leading me to question my own memory haha!)

Anyways, fast forward, I remember seeing her read the passage of Scripture before the church one morning and thinking to myself, “I know her from GCU!” Now the stories fall into a similar timeline as the good Lord’s hand continued and continues to work. I remember seeing her in the hallway and being very excited to know we attend the same graduate school, as perhaps there would be an opportunity to get to know her.

As time went on, she was continually brought up by friends from church and my classmates. I began to pray and ask the Lord for wisdom in actively pursuing her. The very next Sunday after service, I heard a soft, “Hi Payton” from across the alleyway and it was Jessie. As I walked closer I thought “That was fast Lord!” I am beyond grateful it was fast and that in His sovereignty and by His grace He had our paths cross.

HERS

I remember seeing Payton on the very first day of PA school and thinking, “Where do I know him from?” It wasn’t until later that day that it clicked, I knew him from church. That same Friday, I went out swing and line dancing with some friends from church, and Payton happened to be there too. A mutual friend encouraged him to ask me to dance, and once we did, we couldn’t stop talking.

A couple weeks later, a couple from my community group asked me, “Do you know Payton?” and told me they thought we would be a great match. That night, I prayed and asked the Lord to make it clear, either give him the courage to ask me on a date or let nothing come of it at all. The very next day, as I was walking down the church alleyway, Payton was the only person there. He stopped me and asked me on a date. From that moment on, it was clear God had been writing our story all along.
